Also known as (2R)-3-benzylsulfanyl-2-(phenylmethoxycarbonylamino)propanoic acid

As sulfur-containing compounds inactivate hydrogenation catalysts, Z has to be removed with strong acids, e·g· HBr in acetic acid· The S-benzyl group can only be cleaved applying very harsh conditions as sodium in liquid ammonia or HF at 20°C (Sakakibara), which may induce β-elimation yielding dehydroalanine residues
