Has a pivotal role in the lipoylation of enzymes involved in cellular energetics such as the mitochondrial dihydrolipoyllysine-residue acetyltransferase component of pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (DLAT), and the mitochondrial dihydrolipoyllysine-residue succinyltransferase component of 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase complex (DLST)
